How to Tell if Your SEO Is Actually Working (An Owner's Guide)

SEO can feel like a black box. Here are the concrete numbers a business owner should track every month to hold an in-house SEO or agency accountable - and spot progress or problems early.

SEO is one of the easiest services to buy and one of the hardest to judge. Results take months, the work is invisible, and the reports are often full of vanity metrics. If you are paying for SEO - in-house or agency - here is how to know whether it is actually moving the needle.

Track leading indicators, not just rankings

Rankings are the outcome, but they lag. To see whether the work is happening, track the inputs that cause rankings to rise:

  • Keywords tracked and improving. How many target keywords are moving up, and how many broke into the top three or top ten this month.
  • Backlinks built. New referring domains earned, their average authority, and how many were high quality (DR 40+).
  • Content published. Pages and posts shipped against target keywords.
  • Site issues fixed. Broken links, slow pages and missing tags resolved.

Watch the trend, not the snapshot

A single ranking report tells you little. Weekly snapshots that build into a trend tell you everything: is estimated organic traffic climbing, are you gaining more keywords than you lose, is domain authority rising. A good SEO welcomes this scrutiny because it shows their work.

Ask for a monthly scorecard

The simplest accountability tool is a one-page scorecard per person, per month: keywords compiled, rankings improved, backlinks built and their quality, issues fixed, content published - measured against agreed targets. If your provider cannot produce that, that is itself the answer.

This is why Tasklith builds a per-person SEO scorecard right into the platform: it compiles the rankings, keyword library, backlinks and outreach automatically, so the work is visible to the person paying for it - not just described in a slide deck.
